MAS-ICNA Convention attracts 6,000 people to Chicago
The Muslim American Society and the Islamic Circle of North America held their ninth annual conference from Dec. 23-27 in Chicago. Thousands came to hear lectures from some of the top Muslim scholars including Imam Zaid Shakir, Sheikh Yusuf Estes, Hatem Bazian and Jamal Badawi. “Sheikh Estes surprised the audience when he announced the grand opening of his new TV channel, Guide US TV,” said Waleed Yousry, marketing & media director at MAS. “It was an honor to be part of the beginning of such a great initiative.” “There was a feeling of joy, engagement and satisfaction throughout the convention.” said Hussein Ata, chairman of MAS. “One of the highlights was the wonderful concluding remarks from leaders of six national Muslim organizations speaking on collaboration and coordination.” In addition to the main program, there were also sessions for youth and Islamic school teachers.
CIOGC’s Executive Director Mohamad Nasir used the Illinois Muslim Action Day case study to discuss how the community can build an American Islamic movement. Organizers received overwhelmingly positive feedback from the speakers and the audience. Attendees were pleased to find that there was a planned program for every member of the family, from toddlers to the elderly. CIOGC Youth Development Director, Amal Ali presented youth sessions with Sheikh Kifah Mustapha and Communications Director, Kiran Ansari led a media workshop on press conferences and writing letters to the editor. “We thank MAS and ICNA for an exceptional weekend,” said Nasir. “Our appreciation and gratitude goes out to the volunteers and staff for organizing the convention and inviting renowned speakers on diverse topics and issues.”
